Choosing a writing group isn’t just about location and scheduling – it’s about your goals too. There are several writing groups in Leicester with varying approaches and overall vibes.
The primary purpose of Phoenix Writers is our writing; the social aspect of the group comes second. That’s not to say you can’t meet new people and make new friends – you definitely can! But if your primary aim is to socialise rather than to write, PW might not be the group for you.
Want to try us out?
The joining process involves both you and the group evaluating whether the group is a good fit for you.
Step 1: Contact us using the form on our contact page. You should include a piece of your writing attached in a format we can all read. This can be a simple Word document, or you can link to it if you’ve put it online.
Step 2: Either Clive or Dan will get back to you asap to confirm when and where the next session is.
Step 3: Attend your first session! You’ll be present for the first half and will be asked to read a piece of your writing – it can be the same as the one you submitted but doesn’t have to be. After that, we’ll ask you to leave during the break (about halfway into the session) so we can discuss and get an idea of whether we think we’re compatible. This is not a scary or cutthroat process, we promise! The most common reason someone might not be invited to join is misaligned goals, in which case we can probably recommend another group that would be better suited to you.
A member will normally contact you after the session ends to let you know the outcome. In the meantime, you should also think about whether our group fits your needs too.
If you’re invited to join, you’ll be added to our weekly email thread. If not, you’re still welcome to come back and re-try another time if you find we might work for you in the future.
